The sand bed is where they go to hide when frightened & sleep. Without a sand bed they may decide to jump, which they can do.

I agree. That probably wouldn't be a good idea. The ones I've had always went into the sand about 1/2 hour before lights out and appeared a few hours before lights on every day. Without the sand it would probably get stressed out and either die or leap.
