Kill it! It's aptasia. A squirt of lime paste in the mouth will do the trick. Cute, isn't it, until it spreads all over your tank.

Kill it as fast as you can, remove the rock from the tank if it's isolated to that rock and there are no corals on the rock.

What they said. Kill it.

OK, you got 4 "kill it" responses... if this thread holds true to form for the forum, the next advisory should be "wait, it's not aiptasia."

I'm no anemone expert, so I won't offer advice. If it's aiptasia, it's a nice-looking one. :)

Cheers,

Don

yikes. I'm glad that didn't happen to me! Then again, I only had a handful in a 20L at the time. I can't imagine what I'd do with a large number of them in my 90!

Can even see the internal organ of that aiptasia.

yeah they can def become a nasty problem..... i would probably pull it out of the tank add it to a bucket or somthing with a power head and hammer it with joes juice. then probably leave it there for a month to see if anything came back.... then possible a copper banded butterfly.

I have said it a hundred times. Get an insuline syringe and a bottle of liquid calcium. Inject them, they do not come back..... EVER

the BEST* method if you can get to the aptasia.

*from my own experiences

It sure does look like aiptasia, to me too. However, would like a frame of reference. How big is the tank? Either those are close up pictures or that thing is huge.

DewDropPony

The tank is a 29 gallon and yes it is HUGE! Let me see if I can measure it. I don't want to kill it. I really really like it.

And I have another one that's small and striped like a zebra! It's SOO cool!

trust me if its aiptasia you wont like it for too long once there are 100+ in your tank you might rethink that..... im def gonna have to try the liquid calcium but where can i get a syringe like that i dont believe u can just buy them and if so where can i get my hands on one?

Good luck with that.

Hope you didn't ever want anything but Aiptasia in your tank.

Yeah, imagine having a giant dandelion (made out of wasps) in your lawn. Kind'a cool at first, but later on you'll regret not dealing with it. A lot.

I have one that looks exactly like this one in my nano. It has been there since I got the tank last June. I keep meaning to get rid of it but haven't got around to it. It has not reproduced, unless I have something in my tank that eats the little ones although I'd be surprised as all I have is bristle worms, scarlet hermits, and pods!

That thing is like the God of all Aptasia. Like others have said...... get rid of it.

I would take the rock out of the tank, and nuke it with kalk/Joe's juice.

You will look back on this statement:

I don't want to kill it. I really really like it.

And will be really frustrated when you find 100 Aptasia all over the place.

They say Peppermint Shrimp will eat them as well, but only the small ones. Big ones you gotta nuke.

Eugh! That's terrible! So sad.

It inspires me to go ahead and get moving on killing the one in my tank.

Dude - you've got to kill it. Trust us. Aiptasia come from an evil planet far, far away and they are here to take over the earth. We're lucky they haven't migrated to land yet!

kill it kill it kill it!

I did the same thing as you. I thought the one aiptasia I had was awesome. I thought it looked so cool when it ate big pices of shrimp I fed it. Now there are hundreds all over my tank!!!!!

[B]Eugh!

Well, it's not like I have corals or anything that will get harmed by it. This is only my second sw tank ever. I don't have enough light to keep corals right now and this is the only thing I can keep that is anywhere near "coral like." I will just kill most of the offspring every week or so.

Any idea of what the zebra striped one could be? Sorry, I can't take a picture of it. It's too small right now and my camera doesn't have a good enough zoom.

ACBlinky

If you don't plan on ever adding corals to the tank, you could keep it as a pet and try to keep the population low with regular applications of kalk/joe's juice/vinegar etc. If, however, you ever want to use this rock in a tank housing corals, I'd nuke that little sucker NOW. How it no mercy. Aiptasia nems reproduce like coffee shops -- one morning you wake up and there are hundreds all over the place, and they're very hard to eradicate once they get a foothold. They'll bury their feet in little holes and retract beyond reach when you try to squirt them. They'll grow behind the rockwork where you can't see or get to them, and there will always be one or two that you miss (or just can't see), that will start spreading as soon as you're finished your weekly killing spree. They become such a plague (see picture above) that people have been known to give up and leave the hobby, because no matter what they do these creatures continually spring up underneath and around their corals, stinging them to death.

Seriously, kill it.
