Hey Russ,

I'm looking to tune up my system a bit and have a few questions.

1. I have a refillable cartridge for my DI resin (verticle canister). Are there different sizes? Long story short I had one but altered it beyond repair for a project. Got another from a friend but it doesn't fit tightly in the canister once it's screwed in.

2. What is the shelf life of bulk DI resin I can't remember when i got it but have some and it gets exhausted real quick. I'm wondering if it's the resin or something else.

3. I have a hand held TDS meter and was considering getting an inline meter. I remember hearing somewhere that they are not as good as hand held ones. is that right? The one I have is a Hanna TDS 1 (blue body black cap)

thanks in advance,

RE the refillable cartridge not fitting - are you missing the rubber washer at the top?

Even stored under perfect conditions, mixed bed resin will start to lose some capacity after 6 to 9 months. It can go bad much quicker if exposed to air, allowed to dry out, or if affected by biological growth.

Generally, handheld uints are more accurate. Check the instructions manual for that particluar meter for specifics. The true value of the inlines is convenince rather than precision.

Check the tds of the DI feedwater (probably your RO water) and see if that is why the resin is exhausing quickly.

thanks Russ,

after posting I compared the cart. to another and it is shorter. go figure.

I stored it in a tupperware coinainer moist with water out of the filter but i bet it's probably at least 2 yrs old. Time to get some more :)
one more question are there any negatives to the color changing resin vs. non?

Not really. I've seen reports that the color changing indicator is detectible at parts per billion. Many Many reefers use it...
