I'm just beginning in the hobby (in research mode, haven't even purchased any equipment yet). I want to get a 75 to 90 gal tank, but am having trouble finding a suitable location in the house. My house has baseboard heat registers that are present on most of the available wall space. I have read that a tank shouldn't be placed in front of heat registers or A/C ducts. The heat registers don't feel like they put out that much heat (we have all kinds of other furniture placed in front of the registers). Would it be alright to have a tank in front of one of the registers. Does anyone have experience with a tank in front of baseboard heat registers?

First off, WELCOME TO RC!

I do have a 75g in front of a heat register. The heat doesn't seem to do too much to the tank, but....right now, it's a cichlid tank, not a reef. So, my lights ..just flourescent's, are only running maybe 3-4 hours per day.

I'm not sure how much it will effect a reef with 8-12 hours of high output lighting.

Probably best to avoid it if you can. The heat from the registers may make the tank temperature swing too much (although this is just a guess). Can you disconnect or turn off the register? Also a fish only tank may be able to tolerate this temp swing better than a tank with corals (as long as the swing isn't too much).

Hey I also have the same problem, but instead of a heat register in the way I have those air return grille/register on a wall where I want to put my tank against.

I'd really like some opinions on this myself(dont mean to hijack the thread). Is it okay if I put the tank about 4" away from the air return so that I don't restrict air from getting sucked or should I just find a new location which I doubt will be easy.
