I figured I would update the board with pics of my 30 gallon. I lost a bout with ich a couple of months ago and I'm pretty much starting over with my live stock. QT is being setup now..;) It has been 6 weeks since any fish has been in the tank. In that time frame I've done a lot of reading. I bought some ESV Bionic calcium/alkalinity two part last night and I started adding the calcium part today. My alkalinity is at 11 and my calcium is at 300ppm using Saliferts test kits.

It's weird that my Alk is that high and my calcium is that low. Maybe the fact I have a glass lid on my tank has something to do with it. Maybe it's because I've religiously did 5 gallon water changes every two weeks. Who knows. In any case I'm starting to bring the calcium levels up (SLOWLY) while keeping a close eye on my Alk levels.

I recently bought some nassairus snails to kind of stir the sand up for me and eat up some of the red algae that has started to collect on the DSB. Boy those guys really do a good job. I should of gotten them a lot sooner.

While my tank was fishless I noticed those little white bugs (Copepods) starting coming out every where. I didn't know what they were till I read up on them and now I'm glad I have them..;)

Anyways, one thing I've learned through all of this. PATIENCE. PATIENCE. PATIENCE. On to the pics..

Can anyone tell me what that little flower looking thing is on that snail shell. It has a worm like structure connected to the shell.

That is a horseshoe warm. Closely related to christmas tree warms. They are all over the place in the caribbean. Very cool. Hitchhiker I am guessing.

Yup, it was a hitchhiker. The snail died a while back. Guess it's time to mount that shell some where on the rocks..;)

Yeah you definitely should. Rocks with 8-10 christmas three worms on them sell for about 50 bucks. So I guess that little guys a 3-5 dollar freebie.

sweet. Also, It does have a horshoe shape under the shell. I think I will find a little nook on the rock for him and jam him in there.

Nice tank. Word of advice, watch that briareum closely. Once it takes off it is unstoppable. It will grow right over coral. I wound up taking out a huge rock to get rid of it, couldn't get the stuff off.

good advice. I noticed it's skeleton is starting to attach to my rock. I don't want to get rid of it. maybe I can cut it in half to keep its size down?

thanks everyone who commented on the rock work. Of course it took like 100 tries to get it how I like it..;)

I have another question about that briareum coral. Would it be ok on the sand?

In my experience you can't kill this stuff no matter where you put it. I'm still scaping rocks here and there because any little patch will be a big patch before you know it. It keeps popping up! I would just make sure it can't get to the main rockwork. I suppose it would live directly on the sand if you could keep it down somehow.
