For those of you that have used Eheim return pumps

Did you take out the sponge prefilter or leave it in the pump? Seems like it would be a nitrate trap over time if you didn't rinse it out often. Should I ditch it, or is it necessary on this pump?

I didn't know these even had a prefilter sponge? Where would they put it? Which Eheim pump have you got?

i ditched mine.

between the polyfilters in my baffles and filter sock, the eheim stuff was just overkill.

It is the 1260 model. It has a square filter under the front cover, that sucks water through it that is drawn into the pump.

I never used mine either, just another place to break down waste (and forget about it) that I did not need.

I remove my. My filter sock removes all before it get to my pumps.

i kept mine in.

Ditched mine in my 1262. Have filter socks that catch most of the stuff before it reaches the pump. Just another debri trap that would need to be cleaned and hopefully not forgotten and spike nitrates
