View Full Version : Interest in borrowing a sea hare?

I'm tossing around the idea of picking up a sea hare for my fuge. I've got a decent amount of hair algae in there (almost looks like cheato growing off the glass) and thought that one would make a good candidate.

My worry is in keeping him fat and happy - I see in the MARS forum that they all kind of take turns using one, so I thought I'd float that idea to you guys.

If I were to pick one up, would any of you want to open up your salad bar to him? ;) My banded sleeper goby and starry blenny have almost wiped out that garbage algae in the DT - some of what's growing in the fuge is in the DT but they're not touching it, so I doubt they'd do anything in the fuge, so I'd really only need the hare in the fuge.

My only request is that if you even have even the slightest hint that something may be amiss in your tank that you'd not volunteer to babysit - as I'd hate to bring something into my tank or pass it on to someone else. ;)

No guarantee I'm gonna pick one up - just gauging interest in case I do.

I been following the same link. However, I have seen some people get them and not keep them alive for awhile. I like the idea think its a great idea. I however, dont have a hair algae problem and haven't for quite some time now. No idea why. I would wait if your considering it Mike say a month or two and see if the little guy they have makes it from tank to tank to tank. I heard they are really neat to watch though.

ive been watching too, i had hair algae like crazy before the upgrade, i hope since scrubbing the rocks and changing the substrate, i have fixed the problem, if not id be very interested, before upgrading I almost bought one but it made it an even better excuse to just upgrade.

The only thing I think I would be worried about is if we have enough in the group with a hair algae problem. From what I have been reading one seahare can take care of a tank in about a week. They seem to be some quick movers.

1 week? Dang - didn't think it was THAT fast. What kind of hair do they eat? Like I said - my starry blenny and banded sleeper goby have almost wiped my tank clean of the stuff I had that looked like Maiden's Hair. I've got one section with a bit left - otherwise before them it was getting kind of out of control. ;) (although the 2 different batches of phosphate remover in 4 days in my Phosban reactor couldn't be hurting either...)

They're not touching the stuff that looks like cheato (which looks kinda cool growing in grass-like patches) or the fern-like algae. My algae pack came with an arrow crab that chops the cheato-esque pieces into long chunks and eats it - holding it like a candybar and making it's way down the stalk. Funny to watch!

Hoping to score a tomini/flame-fin tang this weekend - if it doesn't like the cheato-esque or fern, it'll love the crazy amount of lettuce that's growing!

Oh - and while I'm talking algae, Siropa... my Mermaid's Wineglass disappeared this past weekend. :( There was a tiny stalk for a couple of days but that's gone now too.

Yeah if I remember reading it right I think it was a week possibly only 2 weeks and it went through a 120 gallon tank and cleaned it up really nice. I could be wrong. There were a couple of different threads on it.
