Has anyone's Tub's lost the green on the body while acclimating? I've had my frag about a month now and it's turning purple all over. Almost all the green is gone but it's starting to show lots of new growth. I have it low in my tank and the lighting is 250 watt radiums. Originally looked similar to the first pic in this thread.

This doesn't have a pedigree. I got it a long time ago in a frag trade. I had a large colony of it but lost a lot of it doing a freshwater dip treating for flatworms. I'm now left with several large frags. Pink to green branches with purple polyps.

WOW! Extremely awesome pictures and specimens!! I am very impressed! I just purchased a small frag of a deep pink one! And I thought mine was nice!! Did you guys glue it on the rockwork or is it just sitting on the rock, so it bonds naturally? I had birdnests (frags) before and they died. I glued the frags immediatly after acclimation and I was thinking if that was the problem....the one I have now is not mounted yet. Should I wait to mount it? I just got it on Monday, Feb. 11. Every other sps coral i own including nobolus, robusta, pink tabletop and blue jakarta milliapora as not have any problems after mounting. Birdsnests are supposed to be kinda easy as far as hardiness. Any ideas? All of your corals are simply the best!! Thanks!
DJChesnutRabbit
02/17/2008, 07:33 AM
Seamonster, it will be best to be glued down. None of my birdsnest or similar fuzzy types mounted themselves, or is this just me ?
I always end up with die off underneath as they get larger and never have a chance to encrust.

Beautiful birdsnest colonies in this thread. I don't have a decent shot of my Ponape to add to the mix :(, it is in one of those "hard to get a decent shot" spots in the tank. I have noticed mine has tightly clumped growth pattern and I would love to get it to spread out a bit, any thoughts on how to get the Ponape birdsnest to grow in a looser growth pattern. Maybe it needs more direct flow??? It is on a spot that gets good down flow but not side flow. I've managed to keep the tips decently pink under the Phoenix 14K bulbs but it could be better.
craiglanda
02/17/2008, 11:39 AM
Id actually say less direct flow if you want it to spread out more...It will grow compact due to the environment. If it is in strong flow it will grow more tightly together to be more rigid so in less flow it will spread out more to take advantage of as much water movement as it can get..

Thanks, DJ! well ok. when they attach/grow out, do they form a single structure for attachment from the glue point, or is a more encrusting, uniform pattern for these corals? When mounting, did you glue them from the original cut point (if aquacultured) or did any of you mount them sideways to encourage an encrusting, then branching growth pattern? From viewing the pics, it is extremely hard to see the growth pattern of birdnest coral due to the lattice-like structure of the branches. The pics of all these bad-*** birdnests from pink to green and crazy polyp colors are simply amazing and mesmerizing! Had no idea of all the color variations of this species! It really looks like there are at least two growth patterns for this coral. Where mine is positioned, there is direct light from the 250Wmh, halfway up on the rock structure. Has both side (r-l) and down force flow. Is that ok?
craiglanda
02/18/2008, 10:09 AM
i found that the green birdsnest does better under less intense light than the pink/red variety. From my experience with this coral its seems to start one branch and just keeps spreading up and out from a single root which is why they dont really attach well on their own..
The best pic to get an idea of what i am saying is if you look at GreenMako's last pic where he ios holding the entire colony and you can see the plug under neath...With most coral if they reached that size they would have fused to the rock but birdsnest seem to just grow off of one branch so it is better to glue it down or put it on the rock in a safe spot where it wont be knocked over...

The big thing about birdsnest is the branches fuse so close the bottom half dies if you let it grow big. Because of this it is easily removeable once you have a large colony. I didn't have a plug but glued a small frag to a rock. And FWIW, I have mine high near the surface with XM 10K blasting on it. I don't think light intensity really affects it beside maybe increasing the growth.

It is very normal because it grows so thick...The green birdsnest in my first pic was less than a 1 inch frag a year ago so it is one of the fastest growing sps (at least in my system) I had my green birdsnest a few inches under 250 watt 10k HQI's and it grew crazy fast but lost a lot of color...Now i have it about a foot and a half under 250 watt pheonix 14K hqi's and it is still growing really fast in comparison to any other sps in the tank but the color is much nicer under the 14k lamps. then my pink variety doesnt seem to care where it is and it grows the same at all levels in the tank and keeps the same color. I guess it really has a lot more to do with the grand picture than just lighting.
