View Full Version : shriveled looking anemone?

I have introduced an bubble anemone to my 14g biocube. After sticking it in there, it looked great. Its been in there 24 hours, and now it looked all shriveled. Is this normal? My clowns were very happy with it and they still seem to be, just not as happy. Is it dying? Stressed? Just ugly? Thanks for any info.

It may be just stress from the move or it's not entirely sure about being hosted by the clowns yet.

It would be helpful if you could post your tank's parameters (Temp, salt, Mg, Ca, Alk), amount of flow, etc. Also a picture too would be good.

Can you also post a picture?

temp is 75, salt is 1.022, umm.. everything else is safe levels. I will have to test again this afternoon and write it all down. The pics are al follows

How long has it looked like this?.. they will shrivel up for variuos reasons. Mine shrivels to almost nothing every other day just to expell waste. Can you try to touch it's tenticles with something like the tip of a turkey baster to see if they are sticky at all?

Its very slimy. There are also stringy looking parts on it. It looks like it is damaged somehow, but we haven't done anything to it. The fish are even trying to pick the strings off. I am very worried about it, especially since if it dies, it could crash my whole system.. small tanks....

Not sticky at all. Its been liek that for a few hours today.

Sliming usually isn't good. It looks like it's already buried it's foot and attached to a rock, but it could be the angle of the pic. Will you be able to get it out?

I should be able to. Shoudl I remove it from the rock?

I really am more than half temped to remove it from the tank, return it and go to a different store and get a healthier looking one.

If the fish are picking at it I would assume it's dead or is dieing

You may have the same problem if you do that... didn't you say this one was looking great yesterday?

How old is the tank?.. Are you running carbon?

Yes, it was looking pretty good. This is also my first anemone. I just dunno. The clowns are back rubbing all over it, so I'm not sure whats doing.

I'm not sure but I read somewhere here that someones looked really bad then it split, I could be wrong though.

Its a biocube. Been up about 1.5-2 months.

They are known to split when stressed, but not always. The clowns aren't helping the matter, they'll stress it even more.

It sounds like your best bet would be to take it back, if they'll take it back. I wouldn't suggest you get another one until you figure out what's going on with this one.

Are you running carbon?

I have no idea if I am running carbon. My husband knows all of that, and he's at work. The filter is a charcol if thats what you mean by carbon

How do I keep the clowns out of it?

DragonRage

Yeah, thats carbon. The only way to get the clowns out would be to keep them away from it somehow, another tank maybe.

I used to keep my water at 77 degrees and the people at the fish store said my tank was way too cold and they said it should be at least 80 degrees. Maybe 75 degrees is too cold for your anemone???

well great. And the clowns look so cute rubbing in there lol.

I've heard that the temps have to be kept at a steady 72-80 deg. So I thought my temp was good. the corals and fish seem just ifne in the current temp, but I am a learner.

Most likely your anemone is going poo or just changing its water. just give it some time. it does not look like its splitting. I would not take it back just yet.

Trebella

lol, if it looks liek this everytime it goes poo, I'm gonna be unhappy lol.

After inspecting it again, its already looking a little better. It must just have been changing its water. I guess I freak out pretty easily when it comes to things dying lol. Especially something that costs a weeks worth of gas, hehe

I will post more pictures tomorrow, and you prefessionals can tell me whats what. Thanks for the help everyone!

reef tanks should be between 79-82.. I'm going to guess your tank is too cold for the anenome. Most successful tanks I've seen have been in the 80-81 range. You might also take this question to the clownfish/anenome forum... but I'd slowly raise your temp.

The pictures don't look bad to me. I don't see any stringy looking things, which are generally a bad sign. Can you get a picture or describe where the strings are coming from?

Bubble tips take awhile to acclimate to a new situation. They'll move around, hide under a rock deflate, and generally not cooperate for weeks sometimes until they've reached equilibrium and found a place where the flow and light are to their liking. They also sometimes react poorly to having clownfish take up residence before they've gotten comfortable. Clowns can be a little rough. Can you put a strawberry basket or something over the anemone for a couple of days to let it settle in?

What is your lighting situation?

75 is definitely on the cool end. I usually keep my tanks at around 78-80 and try to keep the fluctuations to a minimum. 72 is too cold for most of the things we like to keep in a sw tank.

Your salinity is a bit low...1.025- 1.026 is usually best with reef...fish only runs around 1.022-1.023..

I was @ 1.022 and up'ed it to 1.025 and my corals are liking it better...

Do u test anything yet?
