My red sea sailfin has a "pinched" bellly look to him. I was wondering if this is parasites or if am I not feeding enough. I usually feed about twice a day and then they go without food every third day. If he does have parasites is there anything I can treat him with that is reef safe?

I think you need to feed him more. I always have nori available in my tank and supplement that with feedings twice a day.

I second nori. If you don't have that in his diet, he will need it right away.... Some sort of greens.... I have a Sailfin just like yours, and he started small, and thin just like your pics.... I feed him twice a day meaty foods, or pellets, and every day he gets a clip of nori... he is one of 3 fish sharing it, but he gets his share....

His face is now fat.... And he has grew about an inch in 3 months...

I would for sure not skip a feeding day with him.... He just looks hungry.... Is he competing with other fish for food??

Red marine algae sheets soaked in selcon for 15min will surly fatten him back up to healthy. Also don't forget to supplement with spirulina flakes it is the most palatteable and digestable green on this earth!!

I buy packs of 100 sheets (grade B I think) from noridirect.com It holds together pretty well on the clip if I fold it a few times.

Tear off a strip or two and place it on a clip in the tank every day. He'll fatten right up.

Thanks!!! Just ordered it. Would you say tangs like Nori more than the seaweed select (julian sprung brand)?

I feed TwoLittleFishies brand green seaweed sheets; AFAIK they're the same seaweed we all call nori. I also feed purple and red seaweeds from the same company, and they're also the same as seaweeds you can get in health food stores (one is dulce, I forget the other's name -- looks just like nori but it's reddish). I bought wakame at a health food store, and it's the only seaweed my fish aren't that keen on.

I add the seaweeds primarily for my yellow tang, coral rabbitfish, and coral beauty angel, but everyone in the tank takes at least a taste. I typically roll two 3"x3" sheets (1 red 1 green) together, fold the roll in half, then put a little dulce or wakame on the outside, and shove the whole thing into a clip. It's gone within two hours. My fish were all fairly thin when I got them (as they tend to be), but now they're fat, bordering on obese :D

EDIT --> this is the belly that nori built. You don't necessarily want to see your tang THIS chubby, but a happy medium between my Genny and your sailfin would be a good goal to aim for :)

Hi

If you want to see pictures of well-fed tangs, take a look at
this (http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=480609&perpage=25&pagenumber=3) thread, especially the pic of Peter Schmiedel's yellow tang (middle of 3rd page)

Darn....wish you would have posted sooner. I will be sure and get the red and purple from two little fishies as well. Its just convenient to pick it up at the LFS.
