Are you doing a FOWLR or a reef?

Would recommend against it in lieu of more live rock. They can be done without problems, but you will need to make sure that detritus does not build up in the bioballs or bio media.

I would just scrap the bioballs/media...... Do you already have the sump? If not, you could just use a regular fish tank for your sump.....

The typical sump will include your skimmer, heater, and return pump. Other things could include refugium (live rock, macro algae), carbon bags, phophate reactors, etc.

You can usually find used tanks for cheap, or new for reasonable prices. I found a guy locally who happend to be selling old windows, so I took the glass and made them into baffles (dividers for the sections of the sump).

As far as making your own, it really is not too bad....
