I've decided to go bare bottom but I'm looking for something to cover the bottom with that isn't as expensive as HDPE. My tank is 48" long and 18" wide, 90g AGA. Any ideas or reccomendations?

:) Thanks in advance,

S

I was trying to find a cheap alternative as well, but ended up going with the HDPE from www.usplastics.com. I have a 90 as well and I think it was like $50 for a piece.

I got the thin hdpe from usplastics for mine. I think it was 1/4 inch. I don't remember it being over $25.

And I cut it with a jigsaw.

I just checked, it's $27 now.

A lot of places online sell the HDPE board - look around locally and you can probably save yourself about $25 in shipping costs. Most places will cut it to size for you - if you need nooks cut out for overflows and such, you'll probably be on your own for that. If you do a www.citysearch.com search for plastics, retail, etc. you'll likely come up with somebody locally who sells it. Call around - I was surprised at the range of quotes I got...

I think we paid about $40 for a 1/2" thick piece of black HDPE for a 90. The color and thickness made it a little bit pricier, but we wanted a certain look...

I asked the same question about thickness to a guy in our club who used it and he said that the 1/4" is likely to warp a little bit over time, whereas the 1/2" won't.

I went with the 1/2" thickness. I wouldn't recommend the 1/4" because there's a chance of bowing overtime. I cut mine with a jig saw.
