View Full Version : Bubble King 300 External

The outlet plumbing of the BK 300 external is marked as 63mm. What is the feed intake plumbing size on the red dragon pump for the skimmer? I am trying to adapt metric PVC-U to american standard PVC size.

Maybe it would be a good idea to offer metric to standard adapters for us american customers. :)

Also, I just received my skimmer last Friday. Unfortunately, the collection cup arrived completely broken. The dealer said they'd get in touch with Proline and get a replacement. Then i read somewhere in this forum that collection cup replacements arent readily available. This is making me very nervous about my recent bubble king purchase.

Is there going to be a happy ending to this story?

-Thanks

Thanks for your assistance. If you guys could work out that intake diameter or get with Klaus on it, that'd help me get this thing up and running soon.

The thing looks awesome... I cant wait to see how well it performs.

Thanks for the speedy response.

that sounds great... pardon my ignorance, but what does the extension piece accomplish?

Proline

Just the piece that connects to the T on the skimmer exit & also a metric 90 & a metric piece of pipe ,so you can have it go back to sump.
I am not @ work right now ,I am 90% sure we have all that.
I'll let you know tomorrow, you can always send me a quick email if you like.

anything else= the PVC diameter of the intake of the skimmer (the red dragon pump)
16mm, 20mm???... i think i can convert it to 3/4" american PVC if i knew the PVC-U metric size of the skimmer intake

pic of the intake PVC in question...

i measured outer diameter at 20mm... just didnt know how exact that was... then i found a 20mm to 3/4" converter so i am assuming that will work

@Kip...

the diameter is 25 mm.. This Red pipe is for connecting with Silicon-hoses. It is possible for glued a PVC-Connector, mm to inch...
Thanks for your Posting, in the Future we want glued directly the correct Connector.....

thank you good sir

for anyone that would reference this thread looking for "american PVC" adapters for the BK External 300 ... here are the adapters you will need to convert metric to american PVC

go to www.mcmaster.com and search for item #s:
5460K12 for the pump input
and 5460K16 for the skimmer output

looks like it is gonna cost about $50 to get both of them, but if you just bought a $2300 skimmer...
.... what's another $50 :)

quick question if i may

what is the suggested water line inside the body of this skimmer? i know this will vary for wet skimming or dry skimming, but wanted to know an average recommnedation

thanks

how turbulent should the top of the foam be in the collection cup?

mines been running for a few hours and i have it dialed up pretty high... not getting any skimmate yet, but the foam in the inner cyclinder of the cup is very turbulent.... like a jacuuzi .... should it be level?

this is the first external skimmer i've ever operated... forgive me for too many questions.

and here is a shot of the "foam line" after running about 8hrs .... is this to be expected or should i dial it up some more?

the water line looks about right. it may still be breaking in.

this morning... the foam line has worked its way half up the inner cylinder of the collection cup.... i guess i am headed in the right direction

(just a little nervous after making such a big investment in a skimmer :) )

Looking at your skimmer it looks like its still breaking in, (By the larger sized bubbles at te surface) If it were an internal i would say raise it up, But overflows are more likely to happen this way. I would leave it where ya have it. Give it a day or 2 more. IMO

yeah... thanks for the responses .. it eases my mind :)

Looking good ,the skimmer still breaking in.
The riser tube looks to be pretty high so I would leave it for a bit before trying to adjust ,once it's broken in ,it be easy to find the prefered dial for your set up & skimming preference.
If you are scared of overflowing ,I would leave a bucket underneath & just have the exit from the cup go ito the bucket.

i am seeing the foam level rise more and more... each time it rises.. i dial down the skimmer some more...

when the foam quits rising, i will then dial it back up to preferred skimmate thickness

all is well so far... just a matter of time before I have it in perfect working order

Kip,

What flow rate of the feeding pump are you using? I have the same skimmer.

Kip
03/24/2008, 09:26 AM
i am running an eheim 1262... has about 3-4ft of head pressure on it... and currently i have it dialed to about 75% (subject to change) ....so i am guessing somewhere around 500gph ... i cant remember where i read it, but i believe the recommended feed was around 300-600gph

edited: duh... the 300-600 rating is on the pump

the dialing in phase of the BK installation is getting closer... i am at least in the ballpark .... starting to get some skimmate.... over the next week or so I will do the fine tuning

http://i230.photobucket.com/albums/ee69/Kip4130/BubbleKing/BubbleKingStartingToSkim.jpg

the old euroreef cs83 is still running as usual so the mal-nutrients in the tank dont accumulate while getting the BK dialed in

Kip
03/25/2008, 10:04 AM
for reference... thats is a 10" cup on the BK and an 8" cup on the Euro

Kip
03/25/2008, 10:05 AM
funny thing is that i thought the euro was running the tank pretty clean with the wet skimming... but the BK is still able to pull that much more junk

I like the adaptors you picked up for the intake and exit. I believe the 250 external uses the same outflow pipe size, but with a different pump I imagine the intake is not 25mm.

Chris or Klaus...could you tell us the size of the intake for the 250 external also? Also, am I correct on the outflow pipe size being the same for the 300 and 250 externals.

Would like to pick up some of these adaptors Kip found, but like him I need to verify the size required.

Thanks for putting this reference up. I just ordered a 300 external and was concerned about the metric fittings. Now I am set.
