Would the Dart pump be overkill for return on a 48"x48"x30" tank?

I have one on a closed loop on my 48x24x24. if you have a couple outlets it would be fine. You would have to have a high flow sump and the overflow would have to be able to handle all that flow just so you don't have lots of bubbles or a flow. It's ok to throttle down the outlet with a ball valve, it will also reduce the watts consumed.

Return yes it would be overkill, It will be very hard to keep your overflows quite and bubbles out of your sump. now for a closed loop pump, it would be great. I would only run 700 to 1000 gph through your sump.

Sorry the tank dimensions haven't been set in stone as of yet, but it will either be a 48"x48"x30" cube or 60"x48"x30". Sump will be 48"x30"x20". There will be multiple outlets and some will be run through WavySeas as well, and the pump will also be used to supply (2) reactors.....This is why I feel the pump isn't overkill for the system......The sump will be more than able to handle the flow from the overflows.....

I would still say go much slower on your sump, allow your skimmer to work, and use the big pump as a closed loop. The system will be quieter and you will have more flow, since the big pump will not have to lift the water from the sump.

But it is your tank.

What would you recommend Kim?? It has to be an external pump...Never been a fan of running a submersible pump....

What skimmer are you going to run on the system? I would try to size your return pump to be close to the same rate as your skimmer so you can setup your sump to put the raw water into the skimmer intake, and the skimmed water to go on to the rest of the sump.... Good pumps would include the Gen X mak4, like 98 watts for 800 gph or so at 5 feet of head.

Then use the Dart for the closed loop.

Thanks for the help Kim......Sump will sit behind the tank roughly 10' away from the DT....The skimmers I'm currently looking at are the ATI Bubblemast 250, Reefflo Orca 200, and the Bubble King Deluxe 200

With any of those skimmer the Genx would be a good pump to use.

Wow it would have to be a Monster of a sump to use a dart in a return application. For a closed loop they are awesome.

I use a dart for my return. 360 display with 120 sump. I really like it. It has five 3/4" loc line returns and 9 1" drains =P. Its very quiet.

MG426......I don't think it would have to be a huge sump.....Hey Tkeracer619....can you explain or show some pics of what you mean by (9) 1" drains?????

Tank dimensions would put me around 374 if I go 60"L, and fuge size would just be shy of 125???
