Well, the choice now seems to be between an ETSS800 and an ASM G4 for my 180. anyone have any thoughts as to which one is better?

Neither...
what is your budget?

flexible budget...i dont want to have to buy something twice necessarily. i do have somewhat of a size constraint, as it has to fit under my display tank in the sump (55g, in about a foot of water). what's your thought?

I have had an ETSS 900 on my 180 for 2 years, and I like it very much. Not familiar with ASM.

Agree with neither. I would look Into the DAS skimmers

both are fine skimmers. The ETSS was all the rage a few years back. People are advising against them due to newer "technology" out. If you can fine a deal on either used, go for it. I wouldn't buy one new, though...
Good luck!-Adam
I love my etss 800. Built like a tank. Skims consistantly. Keeps ph at 8.3. Running 2.5 years with no problems. No modifications.

I have to say, you cannot really go wrong with ETSS... Sure there are newer skimmers out, but ETSS has done the job well for many years. I had an ETSS 600 on my 140G and am adding a Protean 400 (sump buddy 40) to my RSM right now. I have run other skimmers, including DAS. I cannot say anything bad about the DAS, it did a fine job, but I am glad I replaced it with an ETSS.
