This was my first tank-- 6 gal NC completely stock. Unfortunately I gave it to a friend when I moved.

There are 5 things I would most certainly do if I were to start another NC6:

Add a Hydor Flo rotator
Add a second pump to the system, in the middle chamber
Use the accessory surface skimmer that's available
Add an ATO
Change the stock pump

The rotator give some good variable flow to different area of the tank. The tank likes it.

I added the second pump to the middle chamber using a 1/2" bulkhead with a locline adapter and elbow on the tank side to give some flow to the back corner of the tank. I feel this is one are that doesn't get enough flow with just the one tank.

The surface skimmer is great. Skims the surface and keeps the display water level constant. You can see what happens as water evaporates in one of the pictures above. I don't like seeing the water line.

The ATO is self explanatory. I have a 2L bottle as a RO reservoir, and it will last nearly a week before I have to refill it. It's great not having to think of top off every day. The float switch is in the first chamber, on a bracket super glued to the plastic divider.

And the stock pump puts out way too much heat, with too little flow. With the Hydor Flo, you'd be cutting the flow down even more. Hydor makes some great, small power heads that are great for a tank this size.

The lights and modded cooling are secondary, if you're just looking to keep softies. If you want anything more though, the lights are next thing to upgrade. It's not too bad if you have basic experience with electricity.

I am in the process of building my NC6 presently. I have taken off the stock hood and replaced it with a 70w 14K Metal Halide K2 Viper fixture...Works and looks absolutely great!

I have also replaced the stock pump with a Maxi jet 600.
I also replaced the stock output flare nozle with a dual 6" lock line extention for double the flow output area...works great also.

I will post pics tomorrow if I can find my camera tongiht...hahaha

what are your plans for the first 2 of 3 "sump" sections in the back of the tank?

I have the heater and filter floss in the first compartment, then rumble rock and chemipure in the 2nd section. Pump in the 3rd offcourse.
