I was at home depot yesterday and saw that they had a line of submersible sump pumps with really high gph ratings at cheap prices. I gather these are pumps meant for use in home plumbing. My question is whether there is something about the pumps that would preclude them being used in reef aquarium? It seems like they would be pretty corosion resistant if they can be used in a septic system.

The salt in your water will most likely kill the pumps quickly.

A buddy of mine bought one from lowe's and it shorted out and killed his tank and gave him a good shock before he figured it out. Later he read the back and it said not to be used in saltwater.

What do you guys think about dumping a bunch of salt water from a water change into a basement sump? Would the salt water have the same effect on the sump pump? The exposure of the pump to the salt water would not be continuous, but it could sit in the salt water for little while.
