How often must you test the water in the tank?

I test the water every 2 - 3 days................ salinity everyday with a refractometer

Depends on what is happening in the tank, how new it is, how experienced you are, and how much you worry about things. :D

You'll want to test fairly frequently at the start. Calcium, alkalinity and pH, probably, magnesium once in a while. Over time you will find a set of things that you do for your tank that work, and so you'll test less and less often.

I actually rarely measuring anything aside from temperature, pH and ORP that are read out constantly by meters in my sump. Salinity is the next most often that I read once in a while (say, once per month, maybe more) using an electronic salinity meter. I rarely measure calcium or alkalinity or magnesium, but that is because I know my routines keep them just fine.

Tanks been up and running a lil over a year now. I test my water once a month. Is that okay to do?

Sure, as long as it isn't way off each time you measure. :)

Randy.... I have to give credit when credit is due. Your first response above is on the point. You know your reef stuff. That's exactly what I have experienced and I do that some what. I really trust your opinions/sug/recomendations. Keep up the good reef work........
