I just got a ranco 2 stage controller yesterday and I need some advise programming the unit. my target temp. is 78 degrees. so I set the heaters on 78 degrees with a 1 degree differential and I set the fans on 80 degrees with a 1 degree differential also. will this work?

The heaters should come on at 77 and shut off at 78. The fans will kick on at 81 and off at 80. You have a gap but it should work. If your fans will actually cool the tank down to 78, thats where I would set them. If you want the tank to run 78 then set the fans at 78. If they wont cool the tank that far when the lights are on then I can understand setting them off at 80 if it bothers you to have them run all the time.

I chose 80degrees because of the differential. wouldn't having both set at 78 degrees cause some overlapping? causing the heater and fans to be on at the same time because of the differential? would heater/78 and fans /79 work better?
No, 78 would be the target for both heat and cool. The heater woulnt come on until it hits 77 and then off at 78. The fan could come on at 79 then off at 78. When it is 78 both would be off. The differential is degrees above the cool setting and degrees below the heat setting, in your case, 1 degree each way from the set point. The set temp. is the actual target temp. and the relays switch off at that target temp.
