I was just looking at the "Show me your Sump" thread. I noticed almost every one had 2 phosban reactors. What exactly are they? I mean they just seem to be a simple canister filter with Phosban as media. Is that all they are?

Yep, I have 2 one runs GFO and the other is carbon

squidhead,
they are reactors, but also the water flows through them from the bottom up as opposed to the top down like older reactors. This "upflow" helps with contact time between the media and the water. I also run a GFO and carbon in mine.

Thanks, I was just curious if they where any more complicated. I have a ton of materials for DIY filters, CO2 reactors etc. I figured I would make my own to make the financial blow of the other stuff I need to get started. LR, sand, ATO etc. etc.

It is only 30 or 40 bucks. You will find that it is cheaper to just buy most of the equiptment and save yourself the hassle of building alot of the smaller stuff for your tank.

Actually I don't have to do much building. I have reactors for CO2 and filters I built for fresh water that I would simply have to modify slightly and add the media I want. I never really had any phophate issues with my FW planted tanks once I started using my own ferts. with minimal phosphate. I know $30-40 isn't bad, especially when compared to the other costs involved. I would rather spend it for other things though, especially when my budget has already been blown out of the water. I actually like the DIY projects involved with fish/reef keeping. It is kind of a hobby with in a hobby. I made some things that I shared on FW sites and people emailed me and asked if I could make them certain pieces that saved them money and where actually better then some commercial stuff that I replicated. Between that and selling tons of cuttings from my planted tanks to LFS i was abl to bring in enough to pay for my lighting, tank and CO2 reg., pH controller etc. I could never produce enough to make real money but it was a nice reward for doing something I enjoyed.
