I would suggest getting a sump first and then looking for a skimmer.

sump set up wouldn't cost much maybe $100.
You would need a HOB u-tube overflow, some standard aquarium that will fit under your tank and a return pump.
Then spend the other $150-200 on a nice in sump skimmer.

LISTEN, get a sump/fuge yes you are 14, but LISTEN get the sump/fuge, then you have SO many options on the skimmer!!!!

Deltec MCE600 is a HOB skimmer and can handle that tank, but it's expensive.

With plans on the DIY Forum you can make your own Fuge/Sump for 150.00 if you have some tools and are mechanical inclined, and if not there help will talk you thru it, or a neigbor who is.

i think i might get the delta ap600.......is this capable of handling my tank?
Wait, you don't have 150 to spend on a sump setup but have 650 for a deltec? listen to everyones advice...GET a SUMP! then a skimmer..

another problem with the sump is that i don't have the room. i have it on top of a cabinet so there is no room under the tank or anywhere else.

Well your only other option is get the DAS ex-1. Under $300 off ebay.
Build a stand so the skimmer set above the tank. The skimmer can be run external you would just have to make sure the skimmer is above the tank.

thanks for everyones help!!! i think i might go with the delta ap600 or something similar.

FYI the DAS ex-1 and the deltec ap600 are almost the exact same skimmers.

You do realize you'll have to set this skimmer on your hood or a shelf behind your tank as its a recirc right? For a 75g tank there's three hot skimmers out there than can handle it, the cheapest being a octo300f and a 75g is its max, Deltec mce600, and the bermuda rogue with a mag 5. I've ran the 300f and currently run the rogue. The rogue is the best imo, but some people have a problem with th epump being in the tank.

I would suggest a Bermuda Aquatics Rogue as well

If you ever get a sump, because it is a worthwhile investment, get a Euroreef RS-100. It is a good skimmer at a reasonable price. A sump will save you a lot of time and money down the road. Overflows are not horribly expensive.

i don't meen to seem like i'm ignoring your replies, because i'm not, but will the deltec ap600 work?

Its not a hot, you realize that right? You will have to place it on top of your tank and feed it with a pump from your tank and redo the output to go down in your tank. I guess it would work but the micro's would be horrid imo. If you make a sump then sure it will work. A das ex1 would save you alot and its pretty much the same skimmer.

Fishkid, you don't have to buy them, but its nice to have the media chamber to run carbon. But a simple hot filter you pry have laying around would work for that as well.....just a thought.

Fully modded the ps160 will pull around 15scfh as an in sump skimmer. Its great for the price for an in sump 55g or less tank if your on a low budget. It won't pull more than 5scfh as a hot as the pump has to much backpressure on it from the hot setup, and it will overflow so its not a good hot skimmer imo. The ps75 seems to work great for small tanks as a hot or in sump skimmer.

fishkid,
buying a $500 HOB skimmer is going to be a waste of money IMO.
If you are serious about this hobby (which it sounds like you are if you're gonna drop $500 on skimmer) you'd be better off starting from the bottom up and doing a new system the "right" way.
Trust me. I was a "fishkid" once too. Now I'm a "fishadult" as are most people on this site. There is a TON of info out there because most of the people who give you a recommendation have been in your shoes at some point.
By starting a new tank you'll really learn a lot about plumbing, construction etc, and the most important part about the hobby... PATIENCE :) In the end, you'll have a nice system, have gained knowledge understand why everyone is telling you to do it one way.
Cheers and good luck!

With all due respect fishkid, why are you not at least considering the advice you have received. A sump is extremely important to your system for a huge number of reasons. If $500 is really what you can spend on a skimmer you really should consider splitting those funds between a skimmer and a sump. Its not for everyone but you could DIY both for decent money and invest in some good pumps to run everything. You also get increased overall volume. Just a thought.

I have a 75 and I took Luke's advise and bought the Bermuda Rogue. $270 from frag farmer plus a pump and it works great! Built well too. I don't run a sump either. My tank is not drilled and I have not heard enough vallidation of the overflows to be sure they will not stop.

Its true, sump's are great and they will allow you a better selection of equiment, but there's many that use hot skimmers succesfully in this hobby. IMO you can get away with a hot skimmer for a 90g or less. Once you get near the triple digits a sump IS A MUST. The only thing i miss about not having a sump on my 75g which i feel is the biggest drawback on not having one, is the added benefit of a fuge. Other than that its not a big deal to me.

Check out the Bermuda Aquatics Rogue Wave HOB skimmer. IT will run you about 275 and it comes with everything you need. You can pick one up at www.toofishy.com.
Hope this helps.

Well, it comes with the rio 1100 and will pull 11scfh with it, which isn't terrible for a hot, but not for a 75g. If you hook up a mag 5 to it, it will pull 25-30scfh and be able to handle your tank nicely. You can get it without the rio from **********s for 250bux.
