I am planning a new tank. I have only done Metal Halides once so i would like your opinion. I am doing either a 4ft by 2ft by 17 inch deep tank or a 6 ft by 2ft by 17 inch tank. I want to do metal halides HQIs. How many and what wattage to cover the tank with light. and get good penetration for some acros and montis. I think i have the rest of the tank figured out. I personally think on the four foot tank 2 250s will do the trick. but bc the tank is so shallow i might get away with 175s? the six footer might need three but i am not sure. I just would like some input.

I had a 250w over my 20H and my 40g systems. I can't remember the height of those tanks off the top of my head, but depth of tank can be rectified by raising the bulb a little higher. I'd go 250w without a doubt. If you plan any upgrades to bigger tanks later, the 250's will cover those as well.

I agree. Do dual 250's over the 4' X 2' tank. Just go with good reflectors to provide the most uniform coverage. Less hot spot too with the better reflectors.
