I have had this one for 2 months now. It's allways been open and full of color till this past week. Only thing different in the tank is a Golden Head Sleeper Goby. AKA sand sifter. I'm not sure if this is due to sand getting in the clam or needing more light. It's under 250w 12K MH in a 120 gallon tank. First pic is a few weeks ago, other was today.

Water parameters:
Ph-8.0
Magnesium-1350
Nitrate-0
Nitrite-0
Ammonia-0
Kh-8.4
Calcium-425
1.024 w/refractometer
Temp 78-79

I just moved it up into the rocks a little higher up and noticed that where it's foot is I can see right into the clam.

Does that sound like a goner?

Check for pyramid snails...Also if that is a crocea they like to be in the rockwork and not the sand.....

Thanks Racing1. I'll do a google search on pyramid snails so I know what I'm looking for.

I have the same problem, no pyramid snails though, plenty of light (t-5 HO's) and I've tried moving the clam in several different spots. I had a Coral Beauty that picked on him for a while but I got rid of him about 3 weeks ago. Have you had any success getting it to open back up?

The wrasse or the angel may have been picking at it. Keep an eye on them.

try cutting a plastic bottle in half and filling it with 1/4" holes for water circulation. Place the bottle over the clam and this should shield it from being picked on.

What is growing on the side of the shell? Can you get a better pic of this?

It looks like a green encrusting monti of some sort. Definitely has small polyps. And a Vermatid snail.

Do you think if this clam dies in the tank over the weekend, will it pollute the tank? Or just supply a extra meal for the rest of the tank? I'm not going to be around it for the weekend.

I have one that my snowflake eel killed last nite, I am leaveing it in. The other critters are getting a meal at my expense.

I haven't seen either of my wrasse (cleaner and six line) picking on it at all. My Coral Beauty did for a while, but I've gotten rid of him a while ago. I'll try covering him up, maybe dose him in some plankton for a while, maybe he'll like that...

Well, the clam didn't make the weekend. But the crew cleaned out the shell real nice.:(
