How many watts of Compact Fluorescent lighting would I have to have in my tank to keep mushroom coral, and ricordea? Thanks

how many gallons is your tank? Watts per gallon is a little vague for the most part at measuring light in a reef tank, but ricordia, since they are a mushroom, can be kept under lower lights. I have noticed though that they really flourish in tanks with more moderate to high lighting.

the tank is a 20G Long. I have about 80 watts of Compact Fluorescent 10,000K lighting. Would this be enough, or would I have to upgrade my lighting? Would they grow well under this amount? Thanks

i would think that should be a good amount of lighting. The only reason i would say change your lights is you wont get the same color you would with halides or T5's.

I do have a spare 175 watt halide ballast laying around from my 75 gallon system. Would this be to much light for a 20 long? I thought that it would be to much. Also what color temperature would help them grow plus give me good color. Thanks

175 watt wouldnt necessarily be too much light it you hung it a little higher than normal above your tank. Personally i think that 14K hamilton blue's look really good for metal halides. but thats just me. For PC's the best you can really do it 50/50, and for T5's you can play around and see what you like, but i have noticed that coral's sometimes look a little nicer if their is blue present in the bulb line up.

I have 250watts of 65K MH on a 30 cube 6 to 8" off the water all the corals are growing well. Two weeks ago I got some Fla. rics I acclimated them all the same, after a couple of days placed on the bottom the steel blue were open to the size of tennis balls. The orange were the size of golf balls and the bright green were dime size. I tried moving the orange and green to a shaded area for a few days with no change. Now I have those 2 about 12" from the light and they are expanding but slowly. I thought the brighter the color the more light needed any ideas?
