Hi all, I dropped my pendant and the glass (UV Shield) broke. Is there anything I can do? Is the glass some special type of glass (I know its UV) but can I go to a local glass shop and have them cut me a piece of UV glass? If so is there a rating i need. It was 400 DE pendant.

Thanks in advance,

Henry

you should just go get a piece of tempered glass and reinsert it and it should be fine
there were a few threads recently i read that said to do this
i never have just what i heard
good luck

Two shields that I have had were regular glass but it was fairly thick maybe 3/16". May have been tempered, Im not sure. The glass on my Lumenmax fixtures is very thin, probably 1/16" but it has a coating on I side which I assume is so me type of UV coating. So I think that standard tempered glass may need to be fairly thick to block the UV but I am not sure.

You could always call the place that makes your fixture to find out too.

Most pendents use tempered glass. Just call up your local glass shop and have them get you a piece of tempered glass of the correct size and you are good to go.

Thanks everyone. I am not sure who made the pendant as I brought it used. There was no coating on but i was pretty thick and when it broke it shattered into thousands of pieces. Watching it shatter was petty cool. That was following by a bunch of explicitives, but now I am calm...lol. So tempered glass shatters into lots of pieces right? I know there are grades of glass will any tempered glass work?

Thanks again,

Henry

I think any tempered and I would get another piece about as thick as the one that broke just to be safe.

Tempered when it shatters breaks into lots of little peices.

Thanks again. I have a 20 frag tank that i want to set-up so this is a minor setback. I think I will pick up the glass tomorrow and work on the plumbing kinks today.

tempered glass is fine thats what most are you dont wnt to run without dont want a bulb to pop over the tank

If it broke into many tiny pieces it is tempered, if it broked into shards {large pieces} plate glass.

Just wondering here... would low-iron glass make a better or worse UV shield? I imagine it'd let more light though, but would it still block UV?

in 1/4 inch or less, I don't think there is much difference in light output.
