[The server is too busy for me to search on this subject]

I found out today that my LFS charges $7/lb for "semi-cured" live rock. Is it just me, or is that an outrageous price? I've been pricing my first tank (75g) and don't know if I want to spend $1k just for rock (based on 2 lbs per gallon).

I have purchased live rock for as little as 4.99 a pound to 6.99 a pound; I purchased a piece of live rock for 40.00 b/c it had a lot of growth on it ; you are in the general range ; it varies but not by much less

Live rock can range in price from about 4 for base rock and up to about 12 for showpieces. $7.99 - 8.99 is probably average . Look on the forsale thread, there is always someone selling at discounted prices and thre rock is already cured.

It's the price shipping that hurts.

you can also make alot of your own rock and use it as base rock and get some nice live rock to compliment and seed it. just a thought.

where i live its about 6.99 to 7.99 per lbs. you can always get alot of base rock and seed it with the liverock. also look on the forum under selling livegoods so many people will give you a really good price on fully cured live rock i got 25 pounds off of someone here for 25 bucks so there are deals out there i would recomend looking in that section of the forum. even though there will be a little die off but thats ok cause your cycling your tank anyways right?

I also love LiveAquaria for almost everything. But when it comes to things like Live Rock, I like to hand pick them. This way I can see what Iam getting. Also if something doesn't look right or fit the way I want, I can take it back & trade it in.

$6.00 to $8.00 a pound is about the going price here in the Chicago area.

I posted this a couple days ago, so here it is.

I received my 45# box of fiji premium from live aquaria and I am very pleased with what I received. This worked out to be about $4.10 with shipping a pound which was $1.50 less then my lfs. There was some rubble which I expected, but it was very minimal and really just crumbs. I was praying that I wasn't going to have nice pieces break during shipment and I guessed it worked :). The only thing that I wasn't extremely pleased about was that there website says 75-90% coraline coverage on show sides because some of the rocks had 0. Not really a big deal though as that is something that I can fix. I am still amazed on how many pieces of rock that I got. I would definitely recommend and order from them again.

This is the packaging it came in:

This is a top view of the first set of rocks that I pulled out:

This is the same as the picture above just a forward view:

Now after I threw the above in the container this is a big rock from the next batch:

This pic is the remainder of the box including the "big" rock:

This is how much a 45# box filled an 18 gallon tote.

I can get cured live rock in Montana for $5.50 a pound, and I live in Montana, farther away from the ocean than any of you guys. It is nice to handpick the rock, too. But liveaquaria is good and tbsaltwater is great too.

$5.50 a lb.WOW....I dont know how many LFS you have around you but I have found that if there a lot of stores in one area, like Chicago, I think they get together & raise the price....so no mater where you go you pay about the same price..........Just my observation.

I still like to hand pick my rock, so I can see what I getting.....Live Aquaria is a awsome store, but whoever picks the rocks might have a different opinion of what looks good then you do.

I think getting it from local reefers is the way to go. I couldnt imagine paying 5 bucks a pound for rock so I was very diligent about finding cheaper rock and ended spending about 1.25 a pound and about .25 cents a pound for sand.

$1.25 a lb for rock......Is it Live cured Fugi rock??? WOW thats cheap.

I was just checking LiveAquaria....For Fugi rock is 90 lbs for 330.00.thats about $3.67 a lb plus shipping.

The fully cured Fugi rock is $250.00 for 40 lbs..thats 6.25 a lb plus shipping.

I do gotta say I love www.liveaquaria.com but 6 to 7 dollars a lb from my LFS isn't bad, plus I can pick it out.

I ordered 90#s of the fiji standard from liveaquaria for a total of $305 shipping included. i think they sent me premium instead, i had lots of coraline, and great selection by those guys...i buy everything from there...if i were to buy 90#s at my LFS here in Texas at 7 per #, i would have spent $630 plus tax...online is the way to go! the kicker is its not taxed.

I get my for $5 per pound here in mid Missouri, although its fake rock. Its argonite/pearlite that is seeded. But for 5 bucks a pound, I'm not going to complain.
