Chaeto for sure. It is great to have. Caulpera can destroy your tank like james said.

I'm not sure which is better or more efficient, but chaeto is definitely what most people use. As mentioned above caulerpa can cause problems if it goes sexual and releases spores into the tank. Chaeto is less likely to do this.

Well, your question really has two answers. Caulerpa is the most efficient in nutrient export between the two. If you're asking which is generally the best choice overall, I would agree with Chaetomorpha (a.k.a. Chaeto).

The problem with Caulerpa is that there is a risk that if left unchecked, the algae will go through its sexual reproductive cycle. . .often times just referred to as going "sexual". I can't talk intelligently about exactly what happens. . .releasing gametes and all that. . .but it can pollute a tank and potentially cause all sorts of problems. Therefore, it is generally not suggested for beginners.

I've kept Caulerpa, and I think it's a great macroalgae. You just have to keep it trimmed and definitely confine it to a refugium. That is the second drawback by the way. If that stuff ever gets into your main tank, you'll probably never get rid of it. Chaeto isn't nearly as much of a problem there. I even have some Chaetoright in my nano tank and I'm not the least bit worried about it taking over.
