Anyone's thoughts on this?

I was given some aquarium grade/safe carbon from the person I bought my tank from.

I've been reading about using in the sump.. I am strapped for cash to spend money on a canister filter, so was going to throw it in a filter sock and hang on the side of the sump.

Any thoughts or opinions?

Just go to Wal-Mart and buy some $.99 ladies ankle nylons. Dump the carbon in a ankle nylon, tie off a good knot at the top, rinse the dust off the carbon real good and drop it in your sump. I put mine out of the way in the return chamber.
J. Sprung says that works just fine to get the chemical filtration provided by activated carbon.
