I have a question about supporting a tank. I want to have a 75G as a sump under a 125G. The problem is that they are the same width of 18" and it will not allow the 75G sump to be placed underneath without the support 2X4s getting in the way. My question is can I make the stand wider so that I can place 5/8" flooring plywood on top of the stand to support the 125G? Does the tank have to be directly on top of the 2x4 horizontal support beams or can the tank be supported by the plywood about 1 inch away from the horizontal support beams if you get what im saying..

I'm sure it will be fine, but it won't be technically as strong because you are adding shear forces to the plywood, where if you're on the braces you are using compression force.

You would want some beefy cross pieces to support it all.

You will find having a ledge in front of the tank immanently user friendly.

You could also avoid your original problem with a steel stand.
