I am looking into buying one of these for top off, however, will the pump continuously run if the water level drops in my sump, while the pump is sitting in an empty top off resevior? I am concerned about pump burnout and possibly a fire hazard. Please chime in.

It is a small DC pump and it shuts off after 10 minutes.

I gotta get one of these. Last time I went away my MagDrive 9.5 was starting to run dry and I almost lost my whole tank because of it. I'm still nursing my fish back to health...

Hot, this will be my next purchase, What are the safety features to prevent accidental overflow, I know of the electronic eye level checker, is there any other double-check mechanism?

The main sensor is an infrared optic sensor, if this fails there is a float switch that shuts it down and sounds an alarm. If that fails the pump can only run 10 minutes, if that fails and you used good sense your reservoir size is the fourth and final safety by limiting the volume available. Normally in 10 minutes the osmolator would pump only about 3.5gallons. I use the 5002.25 reservoir myself and that limits the worst case disaster to 6.5gallons, That lasts 4-5 days on my 180 and 9-10 days on my 58.
