Well i have a 90g tank and my tank temp is at 74-75 between those two degrees. I am running two three hundred watt heaters and its staying there. My heaters are all the way up at 89 degrees and it just doesn't seem to be rising. Any ideas on what i should do to get the temp to about 78-80

Is It possible you can place at least one of the heaters in a cooler part of the tank away from pumps and the other heater?

How cold is it in your house? Do you have fans blowing on the water all the time? Is the top of your tank open to the air?

I would think with 600watts of heaters on a 90 that you wouldn't have any issues keeping the water warm.

Are these old heaters? They may not be working at all.

Double check your thermometer against another one.

Maybe consider rigid insulation on non-viewing sides of tank.

that does not even sound right

I run 2 300 watt heaters on my 330g system and they keep up, even when my house is in the 60's

I'd say you have a bad heater (if not both), or your temp gauge is way off, if working at all. I agree with the above post, and would think it's your temp gauge. Check it with something else and reset those heaters to about 80, last thing you want is to fry the tank. Setting them higher wont make it heat up any faster.

I run one 250W on my total volume of 460 gallons =]

Ditch those heaters for a new titanium heater and get a temp controller such as a ranco. The ranco can be found on ebay pretty cheap.

I think that if it is 74-75 degree, that should be just fine. My 90 in my basement is always at 72 and it has not been a problem.

Depending on what is in the tank, that may not be a bad setting, however, with 600 watts it should have absolutely no problem keeping a tank at 79. I would definitely replace the heaters, just buy a Stealth heater. They are only like ~30 bucks and they are plastic so you don't have to worry about your live rock crushing and can hide them very easily.

Ok guys thanks for all the replays. I dont know whats wrong. Both heaters are new one is 3 months old and the other one is about 2 days old. They are both rated for 80 gallons. Dont have anything blowing the top of the tank off. The house temp downstairs is about 60 and upstairs is about 65-70. Maybe the old 300w heater is not working at all even know the light comes on. I will try to get another thermometer but i dont know when i can get it but i will reset the heater. But when i put the heater in my old tank it rises up and then when i put it back in the old tank it goes back down. I dont know what to do.

The tank will be holding corals, inverts and fish

lol ok guys well i have been on the phone for the past 30 mins talking to LFS about the heat. i got many different answers. The one guy said that it will take weeks to get the temp up because they room down there is cold. The room in the basement is 60-65 degrees. Then i called another LFS and said the same thing and they said you should have no problem heating the tank you have. I dont know what to do because i am getting many different answers. What should i do and this is the only thing that is holding me back from adding the fish.

man, I can't believe it can be this hard to figure out. One last thing you can do is, buy a new heater, keep the receipt. Put it in you're tank. If it does not heat up you're tank w/ in 24hrs, you know its not you're other heater. And we can attack it there.

Ok could i try and add a 100w heater and see what happens. Because before i added the second 300w heater i was running a 100w with it. But before they heaters where in the sump they where in the tank just the one 300w heater and the tank stayed at about 73-74 took the 300w heater out of the display moved it downstairs in the sump. Then it went down to 71 then i added the 100w heater and went up to 74 will this change the heating at all or no. I really dont know what to do i mean they say 600w should heat your tank fine except for the one store and the one guys at the store said that everybody else says that you would be fine so its pretty much one against 4 or 5 people.

I really hate to toss another idea out there, but maybe you can insulate you're pipes.I have 350w heating my 90 w/ a 20 gal sump. My temp is at 79 degrees. But then again my sump is right under my tank in the cabinet.

yea but i am not going to go through all of that next thing i might do is just move one of the heaters up and one downstairs and see what happens. My dad will be really mad.

right. Dr Fostersmith has stealth heaters on sale on the website. If you find out that's the problem, and you need to put a heater in the main tank.

yea well ill probably just put the one heater in the sump in there.

ok well right know i have a 37g and i have a 200w heater in there so this is what i am going to do. I am going to take the 200w heater out of that tank and put the one that i think is malfunctioning in the 37 and then see what happens. Good or bad idea

Temp dropping in the night should be fine as it does naturally when the fish are in the ocean.

Very good advice. The Ranco Electronic Temperature Controllers work great and can be purchased in single stage (for heating or cooling control) or in a dual stage (for heating and cooling control)
