Whats evreyones method of keeping these guys from floating away as well as standing up, I was thinking maybe PC piping and Zip Ties?

PVC Pipe and Zip ties is fine.

Be sure to use a mild vinegar and water wash on the egg crate to remove any processing oils/films that may linger on the egg crate before placing it in your tank. This seems to be a cause of fueling algae growth on the egg crate along with improper water chemistry.

for my frag tank, i cut a x in the top of 1 inch pvc that the egg crate fit in
