I am sure some has asked this question before, but I just wanted to know the benifits of running carbon in the reef tank. Or the benifit of not running carbon. I currently do not run carbon in either of my tanks. Just wondered if there is a benfit to it, that I am missing out on or not?

Carbon is known to remove toxins and improves the overal quality of the water in the tank. Most people do run carbon for this reason atleast part of the time.

Carbon if used to agressively can absorb good things from your water too which is its drawback if used improperly. IMO carbon is a good thing, but it just must be used in proper amounts.

What is a proper amount for a 55 gallon tank, if I were to use the IMO carbon?

I think a cup should do it, personally I use marineland black diamond.
