A glass aquarium with plastic trim does not need a "soft" surface under it. The homosote board will not make up for a poorly constructed stand.

it is a rimless tank, the stand is good, but this is just to be on the safe side

Does the bottom pane of glass rest directly on the stand? If it does, then styrofoam insulation board is the proper product to use.

Homasote is compressed paper and not a product that you want in a wet environment.

I can't find 1/2 in stereofom and I dont want it any thicker than this.
The Homasote board was recommended by the company I am ordering the tank from

Personally, I would not put homasote under an aquarium. It soaks up water like a sponge.

If that is what the manufacturer recomends then that is between you and them :)

1/2" foam panels can be pruchased at Home Depot and Lowes.

Styrofoam would be your best choice.

Like BeanAnimal states homosote is pulverized compressed paper product. Ive used it for various types of projects but would never around my tank. Good luck in your endeaver
