I have finally put water in my new 180 but CANNOT get the overflow quiet. I have a durso standpipe with a gate valve below the tank to control flow to the basement (there is a second emergency standpipe just in case). I cannot seem to get the thing to settle down after two days of messing with it and would like some suggestions. The water level in the overflow box is fluctuating two-three inches. It never drops below the level of the down facing 90 degree, thus no slurping. However, whenever the water level drops to about a third of the way down the horizontal section there is the sound of a lot of air mixed with water flowing down the pipe to the basement (like someone flushed the toilet upstairs ) I've tinkered with the the gate valve, the air intake, and the height of the standpipe to no avail. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to logically go about silencing this flushing sound. I feel like I'm chasing my tail here.

i just installed 2 hofer gurgle busters in my new tank. In addition to it being quiet i like the fact that i can slide the bell to adjust water level in the overflow. I will be switching my large reef over soon

I have a 1 1/2 inch bulkhead in the overflow. Any reason I can't just "upsize" the parts list for the Hofer Gurgle Buster?

You could make on eas big as you want. I built one for a 2" drain on one tank, and on another I needed a cou0ple really short ones and it was pretty easy to do with a 1.5' drain and only needing an 1" overflow

you can see what I did here.....http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&postid=11075224#post11075224

flyyguy,

I haven't seen any info on the number/size of the holes to drill in the pipe. Are there any recommendations on this based on flow?

Thanks

Its not so important as long as all of your holes put together are greater in size that the drain iteslf. If I recall....i used a 3/8 holes on the 1' version and 3/4' holes on the 2' version. Packed nearly as close as I could get them together

Durso -

1) water level fluctuates in overflow = too little air

2) sucking sound (air flow sound, not water) = too much air

Your case = too little air. No/little flow until level builds up, pressure overcomes & water flows = toilet flushing.

Check the mods page - http://www.dursostandpipes.com/PopularModifications/AdjustableAirHole/tabid/68/Default.aspx

(even though the pages says "don't" I've used it for years, no noise & easy to tune = no messing with valves or hole sizes)

I've also used that air hole modification for quite some time and it works well. Just make sure to put it high enough above the water line so that salt creep or debris can't block the holes.
