I would assume a large clam has the ability to lower aquarium nitrates. Its practice at clam culture facilities to dose nitrates. Ive heard reports of clam farm employees urinating in the tanks as well.
Here is a link to a quick study.

maybe, but it certainly works. your pee is has ammonia just like fish waste. i remember reading this in james fatherrees book on tridacnids.
I wouldnt purchase clams for the purpose of reducing ammonia or nitrates however. think of it more like a bonus if it does happen to make a difference in your testing. if you have ammonia or high nitrate issues it could be telling of other underlying problems and your tank may not be suitable for tridacnids IMO.

Thats not very smart. Pee is not only Nitrogen.
It contains copper. Zinc, lead ect. Also contains bacteria, and medications that you take. Toxins and spent hormones. Want that in the water? Basically its like taking a diluted dump in the water.
Just imagine all the carbon you would have to use to keep the water clear!

maybe not but it worked for the guy doing it. this was in a several thousand gallon shallow breeding tank according to fatherree

Yes its ture its not going to kill clams in several thousand gallons. But I meant to point out in our aquariums with small water volume would be disastrous. Unless of course you want to use an eye dropper.
Then again, some living things require copper and zinc. Such as phytoplankton. Its possible, that it simply blooms food such as phytoplankton. Phyto need zinc in small amounts as well as copper. Very small amounts. Somthing to do with enzymes.

Oh sorry to the poster. I dont know about maxima clams but I know that bay scallops (64 mm shell height) filter about 15 liters per hour.

Whoa! There is a HUGE difference between taking a dump and peeing in your tank!
Fish pee in the water. A healthy person should have no bacteria in the urine or any more lead, zinc, spend hormones, or lead than your fish do.... (of course, what tank is ready for a two hundred pound fish?)
True... there could be high levels of any drugs you take as some are secreted undiluted into the urine. Antibiotics especially could wreak havoc on your tank. Also, if you are a smoker, you would be subjecting your system to large levels of various carcinogens.
I have pals who have peed in tanks to start a cycle. Even for me (board certified urologist) this is too gross.
Just my .02 hopefully worth a laugh .
