Robert Krechter founder and President of RK2 Systems passed away peacefully in his sleep on February 6th 2008. Robert was a pioneer in the aquarium industry and helped forge the way for better handling, transport, and holding of marine aquarium fish. His in depth understanding and knowledge of all aspects of the marine aquarium trade, and willingness to help others is something that will be missed by those of us who were so fortunate enough to know him.

Robert really enjoyed the engineering side of the business that revolved around filtration and holding systems mechanics. In the 80’s he played an integral role in the design and physical layout of one of the best marine fish wholesalers in the United States, Quality Marine, located in Los Angeles California. In 1992, Robert moved on to start his new company called RK2 Systems where he took the counter current skimmer design to a grand scale. With the help of his brother Chris who focused his expertise and craftsmanship on the actual fabrication of the equipment, RK2 Systems made a name for themselves very quickly. Today, most colossal reef displays in public aquariums around the world utilize RK2 Foam Fractionators (Protein Skimmers).

Robert’s extensive knowledge of filtration system design, mechanics, and physical layouts of commercial holding systems set him and RK2 Systems apart from others. Robert was one of those people who you could rely on to help out as he always would take the time out of his day to answer questions and give advice, even when he was swamped with multiple projects simultaneously. His friendly demeanor and goofy smile will surely be missed by all of us who were fortunate enough to have known him. My heart and prayers go out to his wife and children, as well as his brother and business partner at RK2 Systems Chris Krechter.
