I have a pulsing xenia farm in the middle of my tank and I want to hack it all down.
I was wondering if I can cut them right in my tank because they have attached to the main rock which I can't take out unless I take apart my whole tank.

yep, cut away. Just be ready to snag them, once they get caught in the flow of your power heads they take off like rockets.

i would suggest cutting little chunks of the rock out from under them because they will keep growing back if you just cut them at the base.

Or maybe just get rid of them all together......
I hate them but my mom bought them and I appreciate it when she buys stuff for my tank so I let her put in there what she wants (to some extent).

Anyways, thanks for the help guys. What I really hate is all the slime!!

do what i do, make a little island with one rock nd just keep the consolidated to that rock...keeps them togeather and they dont spread across the sand, and if they do you can see them and cut before it gets to the rock.

I have a few that grow on the sand.

they are very cool until they take over. I have hacked them back, and they come back, cuting away the rock or scraping off with a scalpel is the way to go.

I hate all this hating on the xenia...I like the uniqueness of this species...

But, THEY DO GROW LIKE AN UNCONTROLLABLE WEED!!!!

Can they really "JUMP" to other areas or can they only move to another object that is touching them? As if they are growing up high on an island rock can they be controlled from spreading?

I have found if you keep them at top of tank you can almost control them. They will climb right up to top if you put them on sand.

I cut siphon and scrape the attached area off with a tooth brush, and throw them in the refugium. I was gone two months and had 15 heads turn to 300 and cover half the tank, they are invasive to say the least.

I would take the rock out of the tank to frag or cut.
I've done it in the tank, and little strands attach and grow where I don't want them.

I have a 10G system that is covered with Pompom xenias. it is quite a sight. :)
