View Full Version : 2 skimmers, one tank?

I was just curious... I have a prism protein skimmer. Just wondering what anyone thought about having 2 HOB prism's for one 75 gal. tank. I know it's just smarter, and easier to get an aqua C remora pro (thats my skimmer upgrading plan) but I was just thinking if a tank could be run with 2 skimmers...

thanks

Whats there rating and amount of fish?
Ive read that overskimming can remove wanted trace elements from the water. It is better to get a skimmer rated larger then your tank.

2 skimmers is better than 1 IMO.

True you can overskim, but i doubt it with a Prizm.

Different types of skimmers produce a varied bubble size. Which collect different size particles. So, in my thinking, having two different skimmers would increase skimming efficiency. If you are worried about over-skimming, you could put them on timers. Running them only at night , for example. Which can also help to reduce pH fluctuation.

If you are worried about over-skimming

What do you mean overs-kimming? Over-skimming is just when the outlet on the skimmer clogs and you just get a cup overflowing with water.

Definitely, two skimmers are better than one, run one wet and one dry, to target different types of organics and detritus. But don't spend any money on another Prizim Skimmer man, those things are junk.

You can't remove too much (overskimming), impossible.

The only problem I see is loosing too much saltwater from wet skimming (5g+) and need to top off with diluted saltwater

What is wet and dry skimming? I think I have an idea. If your dry skimming the intake to the skimmer is on the surface of the water, and if your wet skimming the intake is more in the water column, under the surface of water? Correct me if I'm wrong. I have some pics to show you how much skimmate I'm getting currently.

I think I have the worst combo right now. I have no money, yet I keep finding things to buy to help my algae problems. I can honestly say that I dont wan't to buy a $230 aqua c remora pro (HOB) because I've heard MANY mixed opinions, such as skimmate problems, micro bubbles and recieving them broken. Then again people have told me they work wonders. My prism has no microbubbles, gets a lot of skimmate (I think) and has no broken parts problems since I got it. Thats why I was just thinking of getting another one.

This has been 1 week and one day running:

why not get the remora and run that AND the prizm!

I would get the remora but I dont want to take a risk of it not working as well as I thought it would, especially for $230... Thats my only problem

wet skimming is a skimmate that is very dilute and watery, caused by adjusting the bubbles to ride very high in the neck of the skimmer.

dry skimming is thick, pasty skimmate that is more like mud

Like this:

Personally I alternate between wet and dry skimming every time I clean my skimmer ~every 4 days.

You would end up spending a buttload on a Prizim Skimmer again anyways, like 180 buck aren't they? Get like a HOB Aqua Medic Turbofloater or something like that.

BTW I got my Kent Nautilus EX Skimmer ($230 new) on Ebay for $50!

Recently i have been experimenting running two skimmers in sump on my 125 and personally i dont like it if they are both running at the same time my asm g2 skims really well (about a cup a day) and the g1x doesnt pull anything...... if i shut the g2 down the g1x skims a cup a day ive been tinkering with them trying to get them to both skim well but no luck...... if anyone has any ideas they would be appreciated

The prism I'm looking at is $100. When I clean out my skimmer, the collection cup is filled with wet skimmate (brown/green) and the neck of the collection cup is gunky crap like the 2nd pic. shown on reeftecks post. So I guess I get both. Thats for the help everyone, and if I get another skimmer soon, I'll keep you posted...

When I was first introduced into the hobby, I took a lot of wrong paths that I obviously shouldn't have taken, but I didn't no any better. I originally got the prism because it was rated for up to 100 gallons and it was cheap, so why not... The prism running on my tank right now I feel is doing a somewhat decent job. I get a nice dark skimmate when I clean it and to me it sounds like it's skimming wet, and dry. I know there are ton's of better skimmers out there, but I'll take what the prism's giving me. I think I might do a little more research on the aqua c remora pro, and if I dont like what I see, I might just get a 2nd prism...

thanks for your help and advice...
