will too much light hurt

I think that 4 to 5 watts per gallon is the optimal light but i found this light on ebay and its 1 x 250 hqi and 2 x 65 compact florescent does anybody think this would be overkill for a 44 gallon pentagon?

Don't really think about watts/gallons. It's an outdated way to estimate the appropriate amount of light.

Overkill depends on what kind of photosynthetic organisms you are planning on keeping. Also it depends on how high you want to keep the fixture. Pretty much anything just a few inches below will get burned, and setting the fixture too high will mean a lot of light spill.
