I think that 4 to 5 watts per gallon is the optimal light but i found this light on ebay and its 1 x 250 hqi and 2 x 65 compact florescent does anybody think this would be overkill for a 44 gallon pentagon?

WPG is pointless. what you want to keep should determine the lights you need. that lighting will let you keep most anything,sps clams etc.i have 3 250's on a 135 and everything grows like weeds.

What are you looking to keep? That should be plenty of light to keep just about anything you want. It may be overkill if you are looking to keep softies though. May have to keep some of the lower light corals lower in the tank.
