I wanted one, but I heard they're 50/50 on coral-nipping

it kind of depends on the fish, i've seen flame angels in reef tanks and they don't touch the corals, i've also heard of them nipping on corals in other tanks. they won't bother your other fish unless it's another angelfish. so it's really up to you whether you want to take the risk, you might get one that is reef safe, you might not. as long as your parameters are good it's ok to put a flame in your tank

I've got a flame with a bunch of LPS no problem. I decided to try an SPS and the angle wouldn't leave it alone (an orange Digitada). I like the flame so I traded the digitada in for some acans. All is good so far.

They are hit or miss, with some individuals going absolutely crazy for corals, etc. They are a little on the delicate side and good water quality is a must. Are generally aggressive to other angels except in very large tanks. Gorgeous fish though!

pistol shrimp for my YWG = risky but cool

flame angel = risky but cool

I wanted both, but it's much harder to get em out than it is to put em in, so I didn't get either
something to consider

I have one in my 120. Good with other fish, but nips at my sps. Hasn't hurt them yet, they just keep their polyps retracted during the day. If he touches my clam, zoas, or LPS, he's out! He's been in there since the end of November.

I have one in a 75 that does not touch a coral. I know that they are hit or miss and some do not nip for a long time. I keep mine well fed and keep a close eye on him.

Had my flame for a year, every blue moon he'll do a small nip in my mostly softy and some sps tank but never harmed a coral. If he wants he'll sometimes be a tail chaser with my other fish but never ever hurt one. In all, he beautiful, adds real color to the tank and keeps everyone fit. I like him and he's a keeper for sure:)

I personally feed mysid shrimp and brine, the rest of the time he pecks at algae. what you can do is test the angel in quarantine by temporarily placing different types of coral in. I have had no problems from mine except a little aggression towards new tank mates. It is worth the risk for me because the intense contrast in color is a real attention getter.
