do I have to get more shells for my small hermit crabs? I read somewhere that I had to

Quad - as your crabs grow, they will seek out new shells. It's not a bad idea to have a few empty shells in there. The other option is to add snails and let the crabs kills the snails for their shells :-)

I don't buy larger shells and always buy small hermits, so that when they grow out of their shell they become fish food before there large enough to bother my coral. The little ones cant bother my nass. snails either.

I have put shells in the tank, repeatedly, and my small hermits (esp. Blue Legs) love to tag team kill my Turbos. They also dominated my four red footed Sand Conchs. Luckily my Nass. snails are HUGE and the crabs don't bother them.
