View Full Version : Show me your WIDE tank rock formations.

Hello All,

I will be setting up a 6' x 3' tank. I am going to love having that extra front-to-back depth and want to set up my rock work to "show off" that depth. I am thinking about setting up 2 separate rock formations, with an open valley inbetween, so you will be able to see clear back to the back glass. I plan on doing tall rock work since; if this tank grows like my 90 did, I'll need plenty of places to mount corals. I'm also thinking about making that valley at a diagonal to create even more perceived depth.

Like FuzzyZipperbaum posted lately; without having to go through all the pages of the build threads, I would love to see your extra-wide tank rock formations. First set-up and after things have bloomed pics would be great.

As you describe your vision of the valley, you are describing exactly what I attempted to do. The main difference is that I have 4 feet of depth to work with...and you envision building taller than I wanted to.

I also had to factor in that I have viewing from the right side panel. This meant that the hill on the right had to be lower, so you could see OVER it to the hill on the left.

I ran into challenges when I got the LR because it limited my flexibility of placement. This is really made of only about 9 pieces of rock, each weighing between 10 and 40lbs.

I will be following this, my new set-up is 44" wide (front to back) and I am thinking of a similar aquascape, but it will be viewable from front, and both sides. I'd love to see a bunch of cool examples!

Untamed12, looks great! Perhaps a shot through the right side? What are the rest of the dimensions of your aquarium?

Thanks, Austin

Untamed,
Yep. Same vision. It's nice to put a visual to my thoughts! That's a nice Achilles Tang. Now that I'll have room for a few more tangs, that is one of them that is on my list. If you have a side shot, that would be nice.

ricks,
Hello. It's good to meet you. I've seen you screen name since I started crusing the big boys toys forum. Beautiful tank! If you look in my gallery, my 90 is pretty-much full so I decided it's time to fill up a bigger one. By chance, do you have any pics of your rock work before the corals took off? I will also be going bare bottom.

Keep 'em coming folks.

My tank isnt set up, but it is looking like this, except only full of water, curing those rocks. But heres what I got on the right side for now =)

I have em startin gat the back, curving towards the front. But I still left a good 10-12" in the front for fish traffic

Well this tank was even wider than you want, but you might be able to have this on a small scale...

Rick, WHY???

I heard that he was going to So. Cal for 6-8 months. Also had some problems with his coral, and fish. I ended up with his black tang, score for me. Although it has permanent scaring from head and lateral line erosion. I heard he didn't want the tank going to anyone else, so he chopped it up and threw it in a dumpster...

He has a massive leak one day. Then refilled it with Tap water when he panicked. That killed all the coral basically in the tank.

As far as i know he has restarted it. Also has a coldwater reef going, absolutely gorgeous.

Here is the latest image of my rebuild. Though it's not particularly wide [36" front to back], it does have a couple diagonal valleys separating the four rock mounds. I decided to keep the mounds low to allow for fish swimming and coral growing room.

Untamed, tank is looking good. The pic didnt look as if the color was quite on so I adjusted the white balance, looks even better :)

Ha..ha..yes..Thank you, that looks much better.

I just realized that that particular photo is almost 1 year old. I just keep grabbing the same old shot and posting. I guess I should take some newer shots...and at least clean the glass first!

Sorry to derail the thread but does anyone have more info on Steve Weast's tank (or teh dismantling thereof)? His tank has always been my inspiration and hearing of its demise is extremely upsetting. :(

It crashed, but as far as i know he rebuilt it, there was some thread about it on RC or/and TRT.

He also has that gorgeous cold water reef.

Here's some more up-to-date shots, including shots from the sides and back that you wanted to see. At 1 yr, the tank is still young so the coral has a LOONG way to grow.
