I'll be in San Diego for 4 days next month. Would it be ok/good to pick up a ziplock bag full of sand and bring it home to seed my tanks? Or would the sand at a public beach be too dirty?

Not needed and would not work at any rate.

Your already cycling the tank with what sounds like semi cured live rock .. thats all you need.

Also the sand would probably be too dirty. And I think it is illegal to remove stuff like that without the proper permits.

Okie dokie :) I wasn't thinking of speeding things up but adding bio-diversity.

ever notice how sand you get in the packages is white and the sand on beaches is usually brownish color? the beaches are natures skimmers and all the gunk is what turnes the beaches that brownish color.

Ewwww... And we sit on the beaches edge and play in that sand. That's pretty gross.

Yea I added about 50lbs of beach sand to my 100 gallon tank when I was starting it and didnt even think. When I put it in my tank, it was brown which made it look disgusting and my protein skimmer just went nuts. I siphoned as much out as I could and then buried the rest in white sand.

now if you could go out 20 miles and find a nice area with some good sand that would be a good sand to add to your tank.

Well I'm so glad I asked! :) So I guess a person would have to go a few miles off and dive. That's not my thing. I'd love it if I could get past being frightened. I'd get ate by a shark my luck.

The color of sand is based on its chemical composition and has little if anything to do with "natures skimmers".

That far :) its just a 30 minute boat ride.

heck when i went deep sea fishihg we went farther out in the gulf than it takes to get to cuba.

it was kinda scary being that far out, i hooked a fish a few different times that my uncle said was as big as a car.

they are called a goliath grouper or a jewfish i think.

thers nice rock and sand in the gulf.
