What is the 411 on ocean runner pumps. I know they are supposed to be kind of a kock off of the eheims. But are they reliable? I know they are cheaper, what are the trade offs.

I use one on my 120g the OR6500, I have used many pumps in the last 10-11 yrs and it is by far one of the best. There is very little heat transfer and is very quiet. I would definitely get another if I need one. The only drawback is the fittings are metric I believe

I have an OR 6500 and I really like it. The only problem that was stated earlier is that the threads are metric, not NPT, so it can be hard to find fittings for them. I used it in an external application and it kept sucking air and creating microbubbles but that was due to the thread differences. If I had metric fittings all would have been great. So now I run it in my sump.

For the money, nothing better. Mine has worked flawlessly with a lot of start ups for the past eight months.

I have a 6500 external. It works well. I use their fittings and tubes, but I still get cavitation and bubbles. One qualm I have is that the only thing holding the impeller shaft in place is the plastic disc that contains the input end fitting. Seems a little flimsy to me, and it's hard to tell how well sealed the pump is without running it.

Good bang-for-buck on these pumps!

I run the 3500 in sump and I love it.

I use 2 6500's one for return and the other for skimmer. Excellent pumps and the service is very good. I only had to order fittings directly from them and they were here in a few days. (From Colorado)

Great pumps, I have three 3500s and a 2700 needlewheel model.

2500 on my 90 gallon. Excellent pump. Much better than the Mag 5 or the QuietOne 3000 that I've run prior to this one.

Anyone happen to have dimensions on the 2500 or 3500?

Are they as bulky as the Eheims? If used in a sump, where would the water line be? (In other words, how deep must the water in the sump be for it to stay submerged.) Thanks!

I just installed the 6500 on a 120 gal. To me it seems a little loud. I can hear it humming several rooms away. Is this normal? I have it placed in sump on a pad and with the suction cups on it and about 5" of flexible pvc between the pump and hard piping. I even disconnected the pump from the piping and alone the pump still hums. It is not extremely loud but it is noticable. It also seems to cavitate.

kdblove; This is the pump that I purchased from you. Not unhappy with it, just would like to know if there was something you did that I'm not doing to quiet it down a bit.

Maybe it's me, but I can't find dimensions in there.

firethefish, make sure the washers on the impeller shaft are in the correct place. I disassembled one of my 3500s once while it was still in the sump and did not pay attention to the washer and it did thesame thing. I guess that litttle bit of spacing makes a difference in the hydraulic balance of the impeller?

lark,
I have both a 2500 and 3500 at home. i will measure both this evening. I have done this before and may have written the measurements in my OR manual but knoiwing me I didn't!

A.J./Rat -- I appreciate it.

Also, if you have a ballpark sense of how far submerged they must be in the sump to stay primed, I'd much appreciate it!

I know the return section of my sump can drop 6 gallons in 4 days and at that point the top of the pump is almost exposed and its still not sucking air as long as the plastic suction strainer is installed. I have not tried it without the strainer on it to see if i cones or causes a vortex. I might try that tonight because i think its time to add water again!
I have a new auto topoff system waiting for me to install, maybe this weekend:D

Never a problem with a 3500 in sump. Good reliable pump for the money.

Rough dimensions of my 2500 (didn't take it out of the tank):

6" L x 3.5" W
4.5" H (the body)
5.25" H (threaded nipple)

Mine sits in 6" of water. I have a foam filter on it.

I like them have had 3500 for about a year.

I can't hear mine over the skimmer. What kind of skimmer do you guys have that you can hear the pump over it.

I think you guys with these super quite tanks are lucky.

The OR 2500 is
6"L x 5"H x 5"W including the suction strainer and stand/suction cups but without the handle.
The OR 3500 is
7"L x 5.5"H x 5.5" W with the suction strainer and Stand/suction cups but without the handle.

Good pump, just don't use it external.

I've run a 2500 for 9 months, stop/start at least daily - dead silent. Lovin' it.

I have a 6500 I test ran during a water change that will eventually be incorporated into a 150g system. Silent. The output scared the kids when it flattened the softies @ 6ft head and 4ft long under-surface flow.

One of my 3500s is external in a closed loop and works fine, no issues. Much better than the Quiet One 4000 it replaced after it burned up and electrified my reef system! Caused my 1/4 HP chiller to run non stop for two days before I discovered the problem.

I have a couple of issues, the size, they are too big for what they offer and are due for a redesign, Externally they have been noisy for me.

I use an eheim compact plus 5000 as my return it is amazing due its size, low noise and innovative impellor, However I dont think they have them in the US yet.

I run 2 6500, one submerged and the other external. No problems in a year.
