My tank is about 3 months old now. Corals are happy. Fish are happy. I bought a peppermint shrimp, slowly acclimated it over about 30 minutes, and when I put it in the water, it died in less than 5 minutes. What gives?

I just introduced a shrimp to my tank on Thursday, it took me a little over 2 hours to acclimate... 30 minutes seems like you rushed it.

i was worried about it pooping in the bag... so a 2 hour acclimation is necessary for shrimp, or do you do that for everything?

all 4 of my shrimp I acclimated from 30-1hr and they are doing great I just floated them and every 5 minutes added some tank water to the bags(I know I should ahve drip acclimated them, but I didn't know about that at that time)
anyway I don't see how he would die within 5 minutes eveen if you didn't acclimate them at all.... did something kill him maybe?

inverts are a lot more sensitive than fish and should be acclimated longer

I read that shrimp were really sensitive to change in water quality so I acclimated my fire shrimp over 3 hours. He's been happy ever since.
3 hrs may have been overkill but I didn't want to take the chance and lose 30 dollars worth of shrimp. I figured better safe than sorry.

All inverts should get at least one hour of acclimation.

Well, it really depends on the place you got it from. I keep my tank at 35ppt (1.026). The store I bought my shrimp from keeps their tanks at ~30 ppt (1.020). So I keep putting 1/2 cup of water into the bag (dumping when full) every 5 minutes until the SG in the bag and the SG in my tank match.
For my other LFS they keep their water around 1.025, so acclimation is a little quicker... but I at least dump a good portion of the water once. So 1hr or so.
I don't drip acclimate... I know it is the best way, but it's just hard to do with my setup.

next time you dump your shrimp in the tank after only 30 minutes, at least have cocktail sauce ready.

I know i'm about to get a lot of crap from everybody and i'm sorry for this, but personally with all my inverts and coral, i temp acclimate for about 5 to 10 mins and then say hello to the tank. It has honestly worked really well for me with outstanding results. Fish i do take my time with because I know they need it.
