View Full Version : Tangs in a 75?

I know everyone says not to put tangs in something smaller than a 75, but I want my fish to be happy. I am looking at getting a regal (blue) tang, purple tang, or a yellow tang. Would one of these be okay in a 4' long 75 gallon tank? If not is there any tang that would be?

the yellow or a tomini tang--not both --you could get away with.

Of those choices I would say the yellow tang. You might give consideration to a dwarf angel which would provide similar activity/ color but may do better in that sized tank ... just a thought.

I would say either----ich is not a problem if handled correctly
qt the fish for 4-6 weeks--every fish so you never have ich in the display tank
feed your fish garlic soaked food once a day to help with their immune systems and ich should not be a problem with any tang.
Kole Tang would also work but again in a 75 I'd stick to one of the smaller tangs: Kole ,tomini or yellow.

What size tank should I QT with? I have always used a 10gal QT tank, but that is probablly to small for a small yellow tang huh?

We just added a Kole to our 75 .... GREAT fish.
Wife wanted a yellow but they are recommended for slightly larger tanks

Depends on what you consider "small" ... a ten gallon tank is OK for a juvi tang which is often less than a couple of inches. As fish get larger you need to move to larger tanks.

Yup I am looking at getting a juvi less than 2" long.

This is probably going to be controversial, so I've got my flame-retardant suit on. :-) Keep in mind, that when various tangs' sizes are listed, these are their maximum sizes. The average full-grown sizes are (many time much) less than that. For example, with humans, even though the "maximum height of humans" is 8' 5" (per the Guinness World Records), the average American over age 20 is 5' 9", i.e., much less.
Forcing Yao Ming into my little two-door coupe would be bad, but it's perfectly fine for me at 5' 8".
It's very easy and quite "cool" to use the cliche answers such as "no tangs in any tank less than 100" and "no BTAs in any tank younger than 6 months", but using common sense trumps all.
Having said all this - I don't have any Tangs yet, and I know I'm quite limited in terms of putting tangs into my 90. I'm leaning towards the Kole, and just one.

I would skip a tang, and do a foxface instead.

for a 2" tang a 10 gal. will be fine for QT, just keep up with checking ammonia and such.

I would love to as that is what my wife wants, but a foxface would love my corals more than I love him!! lol

a foxface won't harm your corals--they are algae eaters and watch them chomp through chaeto.

a foxface puffer is reef safe? will they mess with my shrimp, crabs, or any of the other fish?

Haha.. I was thinking a dogface puffer.. dogface, foxface.. they are all the same! :p I still think I like tangs over the foxfaces..

ok i was thinking of the foxface rabbit fish
dat guy in the middle of the tangs

Just fyi,Siganus vulpinus or magnifica(foxface rabbit fish) get relatively large up to 9inches. I have two. I have observed them nipping zoanthus and clams from time to time. Not all do this but some do just as some tangs do. As a grazer the foxface out works most tangs with the possible exception of the Zebrasomas, especially the sailfins.
common sense trumps all
And that is not a cliche?
The whole post was pointless and tried to put words in everyone's and was much more shallow than the actual discussion. Frankly it was insulting to folks who are trying to be responsive to questions. If it's all about common sense why discuss it at all?
Fareforce. A dogface puffer will likely eat every thing in your reef. They are the definition of omnivore. I have one in a fish only tank and think it would eat the glass if it could get it's mouth around it.

Well, I think my wife and I decided on a Yellow Eye Cole Tang.. Should be a good choice for the reef tank, plus we have plans on upgrading to a 125 in a few years! =)
Thank you all for your help!

I would think a Chevron would be ok in a 75 also.
Ctenochaetus haiwaiiensis (chevron tang) grow up to 11 inches. Ctenchaetus strigosus(kole tang) grows to 7 inches. The chevrom is a nice fish but at 3-5x the price of the kole,it is in my experience less hardy after shipping and more ich prone. The juvenile colors are very attractive . The adult almost all blackish brown with a scribble pattern is elegant. It is however a bit large for a 75g.

We have one in our 75g. Wife named ours, Jolie. Since she has big lips just like the actress.
Zebrasoma scopas(scopas tang ) grow to the same size as a yellow tang about 8 inches. Zebrasoma xanthurum(purple tang) grows to about 9.5inches and may be a bit to large. But the 75is a 4 ft tank and if not overloaded with rock and coral leaving adequate swimming room it might work.

I just picked up a "blue eyed kole tang". It was labeled this at the local fish store, but with further research i found that it was not. It was a C. binotatus, a bristlemouth tang which is closely related to the yellow eyed kole tang. He is grayish with some nice yellowish horizontal lines much like the kole tang and, as you have probably guessed, it has blue markings around the eyes instead of yellow. IMO he is prettier than the yellow eyed kind. I have him in a 75 gallon and since these fish are not common fish in the trade as of now, little information was available. Consequesntly, i decided to substitute the "stats" for this yellow eye for this guy, i decided he would work in a 75. He's a great fish and he is doing well in my 75. A nice change from the common yellow eyed koles.

Here's a link to a nice pic of one. Mine is a little grayer than this one and his tail is a much brighter yellow.

He's small, only about 3 inches. I got him for 28 dollars. I don't think the LFS knew what they were selling so i got a good deal. Thats cheaper than most places sell the yellow eyed kole tangs.
