Different opinions here but I run carbon all the time with no problem and my water seems invisible.

Carbons life span depends on water quality. It is a good tool for ammonia control.I think if its in a HOB filter with a carbon medaia filter then it can only help.Clean regularly and replace regularly.

Personally ,I wouldn't run a tank without it. Trace element depletion concerns are oft cited as a reason not to run it. However most of these"traces" are at levels many times that of nsw in your salt mix. So water changes should take care of that concern. Change it at least once a month to avoid buildup of dom and other things that may be problematic.

Just remember that carbon cannot be left in a tank too long because the things that you are trying to remove will be rereleased into the tank when it's out lived it's usefullness, I change mine every water change approx. 3 to 4 weeks.

Is your carbon within a container like a bag, or do you use bulk, loose carbon?

On a 500g system ,I run 32oz. I massage it and rinse it in tank water every 7 days or so and change it every 21 days. Two go in a canister filter for high flow and the other 2 are placed in the sump near the pump intake.
