That's nuts! The description says 33 shrooms, that's like $20 per shroom! Stick to buying from fellow reefers here on RC and you'll get them for 1/2 that price.Maybe not that big of a colony, but buy a few and they'll reproduce.

why would you need 33 lol? 2-3 is all you need..

That is no small chunk of change but not a bad deal for blue and orange R. florida. Those typically go for $30-40/polyp. I got 2 of those last fall for $60 and now have 5 so you are better off to start with a small frag colony and let them grow.

I'm sure it'll sell-- and it'll probably be another seller who buys it. They'll chop it up and double the price per polyp. And they will sell every one.

wow amazing - they nearly look as nice as the ones you get from big als for $50 for a rock with a few dozen on - seriously what idiot is going to pay that for pretty ordinary looking rics.

also tough to do. ricordeas can only come into the country attached to a piece of rock thats like 1/8" or something. that means LA has to glue all those down onto the big rock.

That rock is wild collected. The restriction is on ones that are collected in US territory. Haiti has next to no environmental regulation so that's where all the wild collected ones come from now.

I'd also love to learn more about this place where you can get a few dozen for $50. Something tells me they are R. yuma, not florida. R. yumas are nice, but very different from R. florida which is what we are talking about.

Not that it's important but is it Ricordia Florida or Ricordia Floridia? I see it spelled both ways in many different places.

All the recent references call them R. florida, just like the state.

Obviously all the naysayers here aren't very familiar with ricordeas and the various color morphs and their market pricing, not to mention how unusual it is to see such a large and beautiful colony all on one rock like that, especially the very desirable orange/purple ones.

i was buying them for 5-6 heads for 35 total 4 years ago. Don't understand why they went up in price this last year. My old LFS in Cali finally lowered the prices to 20 a head a couple weeks ago because nobody would buy them.

seapug

Exactly...and under $20/head is just about what you'll pay for this rock....

they are pretty but so are simple green striped with blue shrooms and those are cheap.

If im not mistaken ,you can collect ricordea in florida with only a fishing licence.

it's all about demand. i have an sps tank that has a few pieces that 5 years ago would have brought insane prices. i like them because they are pretty not "rare". let the sillies buy this stuff and in 6 months you can get them cheap once the "demand" has fallen.

i don't have 20 people looking at my tank every day so i don't have to impress anyone. that's why people buy that crap. just get what you like and enjoy it yourself. who cares what you can brag about.

do you have to keep multiple shrooms for them to reproduce? i just bought a single, do i need to get a couple more? do they need to be right next to eachother. how do they reproduce? for over 650 those better get you really really high.

schigara
03/27/2008, 01:21 AM
Nope. I started with one Ric and 2 months later, grew a second mouth and a month later made the split. Now I have 2 and have set some rubble around them so they can continue to grow and split.

there not even £30 for a piece bigger than that in the UK

That is an awesome colony. It will end up selling. It will either go into a buisnesses show tank or it will be bought by another seller to split up and make a profit. Not bad price per polyp but I personally would rather start with a few and grow them out.

I'm really having a hard time believing people's stories here about finding these mushrooms at bargain prices. These are Ricordea FLORIDA from the Atlantic, not Ricordea YUMA from the Pacific. They are two very different things. And they are a lot nicer than the green and blue striped Discosoma mushrooms you can get for $1/each and grow like weeds.

At one time these were cheap and easy to find, but there were restrictions placed on their collection in US waters in 1996. Since then, the only ones commonly available in the trade are collected in Haiti (not exactly a stable country with a reliable economy so it's not a "reliable" source) or are aquacultured.

R. Yumas are common imports from the Pacific so they are relatively cheap. They come in some nice colors but when you look at them side by side with R. florida the differences are obvious.

I've purchase from the diver's den before and prices are a little higher than normal, but this price is just crazy. These are normal ricordea florida that are very common. I bet the collector in Haiti made a few dollars if that.

Good Lord Howenweis is more like it. I think that rics and zoos are the new acans. Prices posted even here are insane, forget about the LFS. It will die down like all of these fads.

3-4 years ago you could have bought those for $8 a polyp. I have rics that look as nice and haven't payed over about $15 per polyp.

Why do people get all worked up if someone charges a lot for something they perceive as unique or of high value? Its not like you have to buy 'em?

sunfish11
03/27/2008, 11:14 AM
The price doesn't surprise me in the least bit. $20 per polyp is pretty reasonable these days for an orange and purple R. Florida. I have seen them for quite a bit more lately. I like to collect them myself, and look for the more unique color morphs. They are a popular coral and usually sure sellers. I have seen the orange and purple up to $40 per polyp lately and some of the rarer colors at far more.

Advice: I purchased at least 40 Rocordeas from them... But the idea is not to get it from Liveaquaria.com (Get it from their sister site: http://www.etropicals.com There you can find them for less than 30% of the price at Liveaquaria.

I purchased all color recordeas they have, and they usually would give you different colors if you order the mix and some of the large rocks

I have to admit that site is only good for recordeas though. There's not much more selection and everything else (aside from ricordias) there would cost less if purchased from liveaquaria

For example:
https://www.etropicals.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=1674&N=12

If you buy the 12, they will give you more than 12 (usually) depending on the size of the order. Plus wait until they have a sale, I've purchased them as low as $8/mushroom before.

Best way yo order is to get the large Rock of Each (Orange and Blue and one that gives you a Mix order) You will get at least 5 different color Ricordeas :)
